Research interests have been focused in the last 15 years on Systems Thinking application to the analysis of complex systems in different fields, ranging from ecology to biomedicine and to energy production. H-index = 42 (Scopus, 2023).

Expert Reviewer for IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services). F.G. is included in the list of the 2% most influential scientists worldwide in their respective field (Elsevier BV, Stanford University 2022).

He held courses or seminars on Systems Thinking at several Universities in Italy (Catania, Torino, Lecce, Bologna) and at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. Since its foundation, F.G. is the Director of SMAC, Centre for the study of the systemic dynamics of complex diseases.
